MOVEMENT & MOBILITY

Why Is Mobility Important?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Useful mobility gives you access to positions you can control. The goal is not simply to become more flexible.

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

Mobility combines available range of motion with the ability to control and use that range. For training, the useful question is whether a joint can reach the position your movement requires while the rest of the body stays organized. Strength through the available range is an important part of making new motion usable.

WHERE PEOPLE GET STUCK

Stretching everything more is not automatically the answer. A movement limitation may involve range of motion, strength, coordination, technique or the demands of the exercise itself. Pain is also different from ordinary stiffness and should not be diagnosed through a general mobility article.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK

Pick one movement that feels restricted. Use a brief mobility drill for the joint involved, then immediately practice the movement again with a controlled range you can own. Judge the drill by whether the movement improves, not by how intense the stretch feels.
